Retinoids continue to be a force in the fight against wrinkles. So while you’re standing in Sephora or aisle three of your local pharmacy awestruck by topicals that promise to ward of ageing, think about how effective any of these products will be if you don’t know what to look for or how to use them?

Dr. Leslie Baumann of the Baumann Cosmetic & Research Institute in Miami Beach, FL reveals secrets to get the most out of the anti-ageing wonder.

Things to look for when shopping for retinol products:

• A product in an aluminum tube with a small mouth or the next best thing – an opaque plastic pump bottle. Retinol products packaged in jars are exposed to air every time you screw the cap off.  This affects the formula and degrades the retinol quicker, so steer clear!

• “Retinol” on the package. Contrary to popular belief, not all retinoids are created equal. Retinyl palmitate and retinyl linoleate, though in the same family, are mixed differently to decrease irritation, thus making them less effective than actual retinol.

Don’t Forget:

• Apply at night because exposure to the sun breaks down retinol, even if you bought a product with sunscreen.

• It’s ok to apply your retinol eye cream on the lids to fight crepiness, though limit this to every third night to avoid redness or peeling.

FACE

Cosenza prepped the Angels with VS PRO Airbrush FX Primer ($14) then followed up with VS Soft Focus Foundation ($16). To add contour, she dusted VS Bronzer/Highlighter Trio ($14) under the cheekbones and followed up by applying a mix of the two darkest shades of the VS Eye Shadow Quad in Eye Contact ($15) on the top of the cheeks up to the side of the nose. “The look is a girl who got a little too much sun with her shades on,” she explains.

EYES

To make the models’ eyes pop, Cosenza applied three coats of VS PRO Voluptuous FX Mascara ($12) — “Do not be shy, coat it in,” she says — then lined the lower lashline with shimmery white VS Eye Liner in Bright ($8). Then she mixed the two darkest shades of the VS Eye Shadow Quad in Eye Contact ($15) and applied to the crease of the eye and added a mix of VS Brilliant Shimmer Shadow in Golddust ($10) and VS Eye Shadow Quad in Sultry ($15) under the lower lashline. The final touch? Running VS Lip Gloss in Glow ($10) through the eyebrows and over the browbone. “It gives a lush, dewy effect,” she says.

LIPS

Cosenza dabbed VS Lip Liner in Foxy Brown ($8) and VS Lipstick in Icon ($12) to the center of the lips and blended outward, then finished off the look with a coat of VS Minerals Lip Gloss in Naughty ($10). “It creates a very alluring pouty effect,” she tells Us. “A just-bitten stain!”

For those looking to get a little nip and tuck, being able to tighten and lift with as few signs of a procedure as possible is important.  There’s no question plastic surgery can improve a patient’s overall self-esteem and enhance body image, but when performed improperly, a would-be enhancement can become an unfortunate dead giveaway to having “work done.”  As many procedures can cost upwards of thousands of dollars, making sure you’re left with the most natural looking result is important.

With a rise of cosmetic procedures offered in spas and salons and by non-licensed surgeons who do not specialize in the practice, patients may not know where to turn and wind up with results that are not as sleek, streamlined or “hidden” as they could be.

The Nike Swoosh
A facelift should lift tissue upwards, making sure to encompass the entire face.  Instead, if skin is pulled horizontally, the outcome is a distinct wind-blown look (also dubbed the “Nike swoosh”).  As the patient ages, the two stitched points between the face’s midline and ear remain lifted, while the tissue in the middle begins to sag forming the unattractive “swoosh” effect.

The Botox Brow
From Hollywood to the Big Apple, the ever popular permanently “surprised” look can be seen on Botox buffs everywhere.  “The overemphasized arch can be a result of injecting Botox in the wrong place or not injecting into the muscle that lifts the brow,” says Geldner. By ensuring a board-certified plastic surgeon performs your injectable fillers, you will greatly reduce your risk of getting these unsightly results.

Duck Lips
There’s no question a plump pout a la Angelina Jolie has been a coveted characteristic over the last few years.  But when performed incorrectly, lips can appear over-injected.  Duck-like lips can be a result of fillers being injected in excess, as well as positioning the injection incorrectly.  “Without a precise injection, dermal fillers can be easily recognized,” notes Geldner.

If you’ve neglected your legs, you have vericose veins, bruises or an uneven tone, here’s how you can get back on track, no self-tanners or tanning booths required!

Sally Hansen’s Airbrush Legs ($13.79): Talk about pantyhose in a can! This spray-on, water-resistant, skin-perfecting leg makeup stays fresh all day — with absolutely no transfer. Enriched with vitamin K, it not only covers, but helps fade freckles, veins, bruises and other imperfections. Shake well, spray the tint on your hands and apply immediately onto your legs in long even strokes. Should you need a bit more coverage, layer on a second coat after it has dried completely (about one minute).

The staying power is so great that you’ll need soap and a washcloth to wipe this baby off.

Smart Cover Camouflage Cream ($15): Should your legs just need some spot concealing, we recommend Camouflage Cream by Smart Cover. The long-lasting opaque coverage of this concealer is ideal for hiding smaller imperfections on the body without the obvious line of demarcation. It initially applies in a creamy texture, blends evently, but sets with a much drier consistency which prevents rub-off on clothes, streaking and creasing.

Give your cheeks some "POP!"

Add a dash of pepper, and spice up your look this summer! We caught up with Emma Bazan, Makeup Artist and Brow Extraordinaire at Pepper Pastor Salon to get her stay flawless all over tips.

Luscious Legs:

If legs are feeling pale and sallow, try mixing a bit of liquid foundation a shade darker and liquid highlighter to body lotion. This will smooth out minor imperfections and add a hint of color.

Two-Toned Cheeks with Dimension:

Use two different cheek colors to create dimension and definition use a subdued neutral tone blush on cheekbones and add a pop of color with a brighter blush shade.

Finally, It’s All In The Details:
When filling in eyebrows, use a spooly make up brush to comb hairs up and blend hard lines.

When applying mascara to lashes add lift to the center of eyes to create a wide eye effect by focusing on the center lashes.

Evoke An Icon:

To create a luscious full red lip, line lip with a deep red lip liner and blend to soften color. Fill with a layer a true red lip stick all over lips and last, add an orange red lip color to center of lips. These three shades create dimension of full Marilyn Monroe lips.

Easy, Breezy Summer:

For a quick summer look use liquid highlighter (Benefit’s Moonbeam) on cheek bones, inner corners of eyes, above lips cupids bow. Add a pop of color with cream blush on apples of cheeks, followed by a coat of black mascara. If feeling extra pale, brush on some bronzer to forehead, temples, cheekbones, bridge of nose, and chin.

So how do celebs get that bronze-California-beach-babe look — without staining their couture gowns, or fumbling (in the nude!) with tanning sprays, creams and mousses?

Read on for tips on achieving a fab summer glow, sans orange-y palms and sticky skin.

Ditch the self-tanner and go the route of Charlize Theron, Eva Longoria and Jennifer Lopez and amp up that to-the-beach glow with a bronze smokey eye.

Make eyes bold and bright for Spring 2010 with colored eyeliner tips and tricks from the pros! Read more for the newest products and innovative ways to mix up your eyeliner routine.
Work In Pairs. Choose two different shades of liner. When two colors are smudged together it instantly creates a smokey eye effect. Try Gold and Green. We like Chanel’s Eye Definer in Khaki Dore and L’Oreal’s Paris Eyeliner in Sage. With the green shade, draw on the lower rim of your eye. Blink a few times to smudge the color to the upper lid. Then take the gold color and trace the upper lash line. From side to side, blend both lines with a small eyeshadow brush.

Rock Out. Try Urban Decay’s Heavy Metal Glitter Liner in Metalhead for some alternative glamour. From the inner to outer corner on the upper lid, apply a thick line. Put a second coat directly on top to deepen the hue.

Play Around. Use a bigger turquoise pencil, like Sephora’s Jumbo Pencil in Blue 508Y. Line the entire shape of your eye. Very lightly use one finger to slightly smear a little bit of color toward the crease. With the pencil, re-trace the original top lid.

Create emphasis on the eyes by using mascara that will thicken lashes to the max. Lash Stiletto Voluptuous by Maybelline.

All focus should be on the eyes, so opt for a clear glossy lip plumper, like Lipfusion’s XL.
