Eyebrow tips from Jewel's celebrity makeup artist

Jewel has a beautiful and elegant look. While her features are generally understated, her overall appearance is nearly angelic.

When we look at celebrities we may not think specifically about the role that their eyebrows may take in their celebrity look. We tend to think generally of makeup application.

But as we are about to find out, the eyebrow acts as part of the canvas to the face.

Lauren Gott is a celebrity makeup artist for Jewel and does a fantastic job helping Jewel look consistently flawless.

She’s got a great set of eyebrow tips on how to get the most out of your eyebrows to compliment your look.

My tip is defining the eyebrows without having them look painted on and clown-like. I use this tip for singer-songwriter Jewel; she is blonde and has fair brows.

The brow is crucial; it defines the face and can make the face appear more youthful. It is very important not to over-pluck the brow; the brows eliminated should be those clearly out of line with the brows natural shape below and above.

Over-plucking can make the face appear frightened, harsh, or potentially theatrical, and that is not the look I try to achieve for most celebrities. To accentuate the brow I like to use a matte eye shadow in a shade or two lighter than the hair color.

I use a wedged brush with stiff bristles and dip it in water before sweeping the eye shadow on the brush. The key is to not be heavy handed with the pigment and utilize light feathered motions when applying the color on the brows; it should not look like a solid line of color.

The shape created should follow the natural shape of the brow and compliment the face. For Jewel, the brow is slightly thicker at the base of the inner part of the eye, has a slight arch which is in a visual line with the outside edge of the iris, and tapers out in width toward outside edges of the eye.

I like to slightly elongate her brows toward the ends to compliment her face. Last but certainly not least, I use clear brow gel and brush it through the brows in a upward motion to not only set the brow but most importantly to wick away excess pigment which helps the brow appear more natural and feathered rather than drawn in.

We recently were speaking with a very passionate professional makeup artist named Promise Gebreyohannes. She is an artist with a celebrity background having worked with clients such as Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child, Meagan Good, Jessi M’Bengue(model), Stacy Dash, and many other up and coming models and actresses. She knows the Hollywood beauty scene.

But lately she has had more of a passion educating every day women on how to appreciate and accentuate their own natural beauty. Here is a post she wrote for us regarding a rather extreme beauty treatment that many women of color have been turning to for quite some time.

I was recently asked about makeup for women of color and I have to vent about an issue that has plagued us for years. I am an Ethiopian woman who migrated to Canada, and in more recent years to the United States of America. I have had the privilege as a make-up artist to enhance and bring out the natural beauty in women.

With that being said, when applying makeup for women of color, I have noticed a consistent request from most (not all) of these women to apply a shade of foundation that is lighter than their own skin tone/complexion. In some cases, but not often, the reverse has also been requested. “Could you give me a shade of foundation that is darker than my skin please?”

Over the last 10 years of doing make-up I can not tell you how often I have had to convince one woman of color after another that she is beautiful in the shade God created her, to encourage her to embrace that beauty, and more importantly, to own that beauty.

There are three keys to achieving a flawless everyday look using make-up – unless of course it is for theatrical or high fashion purposes.

1. Take great care of your skin. It is the foundation that will allow make-up to sit beautifully and naturally.

2. Choose a foundation that matches your own skin tone. This is so important! Anything lighter or darker will make it look obvious that you are wearing makeup and will appear completely unnatural. Makeup for women of color should work with our natural shade, not try to alter it.

3. See yourself as already beautiful. Only use make-up to enhance your already GORGEOUS features! Less is more!

Society and the beauty industry have contributed to the insecurities of colored women and minority women as a whole. They continuously suggest that lighter is better, thinner is better, straighter is better, etc.

If we let it, this leaves women of color trying to fit into a stereotype of beauty that in all honesty does not even really exist in the industry that is promoting it! Can we say airbrushed, PhotoShopped, and a ton of makeup?!

Seriously, just in case you either didn’t know or may have forgotten, the images that we see in the media are always enhanced by graphic designers with very complex computer programs. These images are not of real women in their natural state. They are of women who have been digitally enhanced and altered beyond what is humanly possible.

And the women that we see on the runway are prepped on site by professionals with high grade product that is designed for specific lighting and cameras. That is not reality either.

That being said, my message to women of color is: Put down the bleaching creams, the lightening serums, the obviously too light or too dark foundation, and embrace YOU!

And for those women who have a hard time finding an exact match to their skin complexion I have a suggestion. While I do not usually promote products this time I will in order to help you get on track and make your journey to embracing “YOU” easier.

To find out, we decided to investigate one of the latest skin care products on the market, and what better than a celebrity endorsed skin care treatment. For our test we looked at Cindy Crawford’s range of beauty products; after all, I guess every woman would give their right arm to have skin like Miss Crawford’s?

In some ways a make-up artist has to be like a magician. Now you see it and with a wave of my brush and some really good concealer…. now you don’t! I would have to say that working on ruddy complexions such as Bridget Fonda’s, can be a challenge for some, I dive right in so to speak.

My favorite weapon for combating the uneven, ruddy skin is Laura Mercier’s concealer foundation. Here’s the trick– take your favorite eye cream or facial moisturizer and mix it along with the concealer and a concealer brush and start off by evening out the eye area, not forgetting to go right up to the sides of the bridge of the nose.

A lot of fair complexions on red heads and blondes can tend to have the, what I call, “Blue Vein Effect,” so you want to make sure that you tone down and even out this area underneath the eyes and along the sides of the bridge of the nose and extend outward to conceal the cheeks, chin and forehead.

When you have applied the concealer to all the areas of the face that need all over evening out of the skin tone, follow with a lightly dampened sponge and blend and smooth the concealer in all over the face. This works like a charm and is really a flawless natural looking second skin.

To set the concealer foundation I always use a veil of bare mineral powder. For one, it’s very soft and light on the skin which is also perfect for setting the concealer underneath the eyes and at the sides of the bridge of the nose. Thus Presto! Now you have an all over evened out canvas to work with!

Terri Seymour Learns How To Put On Makeup In A Hurry

Melissa is a UK native who followed her life’s dream to be a professional makeup artist all the way to Hollywood! I’ve spoken with Melissa myself and I can guarantee you that she absolutely loves makeup and beauty.

She has a very long list of UK native celebrities that she has worked with. She currently is a much appreciated celebrity beauty expert to Terri Seymour of the show “Extra.”

Passion for beauty inside out is the name of the game here at True Hollywood Makeup and Melissa most definitely has the goods.

She’s got a great story of picking up Terri at the airport on a tight schedule. Even under the gun with Terri needing to be in front of the camera within the hour, Melissa was able to get her ready and looking fabulous without even blinking an eye.

Here is a great routine that will teach you how to put on makeup in a hurry, and still looking amazing on camera!

This is what I had to do today except it wasn’t my own makeup it was for Terri! Her schedule had changed and as she had just arrived off of a plane and we didn’t have time to stop, I did her full makeup in the car in 10 minutes.

If you get caught out and have to do your makeup on your way to an event (only if you are the passenger PLEASE!) here is how to do it:

First of all get the essential products together in one bag so you aren’t hunting for things when you are in a hurry. We aren’t talking fancy makeup here, just the basics so you look great when you arrive.

Here is a list of products to gather:

Powder Foundation – this is the quickest way to make your skin look great and as it’s in powder form it won’t spill or get messy. Apply extra where you need more coverage to omit the need for concealer.

Powder Bronzer- apply this next with a big fluffy brush all over to give you a glow, take it down your neck and decollete too.

A subtle pink, peach or plum Blush depending on your skin tone – dust this lightly on your cheekbones to brighten your whole face.

One shade of shimmery neutral Shimmery Eyeshadow – put this all over the lid and up to the crease and blend well for a wide awake look. This is not the time for shading and mixing colors. The shimmer will add enough drama for evening.

Eyeliner Pencil in a darkish metallic shade – when the car stops at the light quickly line upper and lower lashes for some definition.

An eyebrow brush or brow gel so you can at least brush your brows into shape.

mascara – wipe the brush on a tissue so that it doesn’t smudge whilst you apply it. Just put one coat on, you can always apply more later at the event.

lipgloss – in a neutral shade so that if a little goes over the edges it’s not a complete disaster.

This should enable you to look fresh and polished when you arrive, no one will ever know how close you were to being caught out!
